Offered in the hope that this vision of America may find a place among the many competing voices of today.
Dr. Arthur A. Rouner is a son of New England and its Congregational way of church life. He has long had a "passion for America."
Growing up in a Congregational parsonage in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Dr. Rouner studied American history at Harvard University and American church history at Union Theological Seminary in New York. He has had a life-long love affair with the Pilgrims of Plymouth, and the Puritans of Boston, and the vision of faith that drove them from England's 17th century oppression of Separatists to cross a great ocean to fulfill their dream of an "errand into the wilderness," to create communities and a country that would be a "light to the nations."
It is this faith foundation of democracy that has been a passion of Dr. Rouner's years of preaching and writing as a minister, first in Massachusetts, and then for 32 years in what grew to be one of America's largest Congregational churches. A Passion for America grew out of the dramatic celebrations of both Thanksgiving Day and Independence Day at the Colonial Church of Edina, traditions for 32 years.
